Records broken and Olympics qualification for the Hockeyroos

One of our elite Hockey partners, the Australian Hockeyroos and in particular their captain have enjoyed a fantastic few weeks on the pitch.

The Hockeyroos recently finished third in the World Hockey League, beating New Zealand, Italy, India, Belgium and Poland along the way. The third place finish guarantees the Hockeyroos a ticket to the Rio 2016 Olympics, where they will be one of the favourites to win.

Kukri caught up with the Hockeyroos captain, Madonna Blyth, who commented on the team’s recent success…

“Olympic qualification was our number one priority heading into the World League Semi Finals recently and we are really excited that we are officially heading to the Rio Olympic Games. For us now we are just focusing on making the improvements we need to give us the best shot of bringing home an Olympic gold medal.”

The Hockeyroos talismanic captain also enjoyed some personnel success during the World Hockey League in Belgium, having broken the Australian record for the most appearances. Blyth, born in Brisbane, has now played an impressive 304 matches for her country, with her first cap in 2004 during the Champions Trophy.

Madonna was also kind enough to comment on her record match…

“Whilst my 304th match was disappointing in terms of the result (we lost to NZ) it was a really proud moment for me and one of the most special of my career. Setting out as a young Hockeyroo all those years ago you are just searching for your next game and not thinking much further ahead than that. I feel very lucky and privileged to have played as many games as I have and hopefully there are a few more yet to come!”

Kukri is proud and honoured to supply the Hockeyroos and wish Madonna and her players every success in their build up to and appearance in the Rio Olympics.
